THE MIRIAM PROJECT

It was started in 1996 and deals with assisting babies whose mothers are serving time in prison, these babies are found in the prison cells with their mothers.

We there fore assist these babies with all the necessary requirements for the babies' welfare because it is our belief that the babies are only victims of circumstances and deserve what all babies need regardless of their parents' crimes.

Under this project, we visit many prisons to offer assistance to these babies. Some of these mothers either have no one to look after the babies or for whatever reasons chose to keep the babies while they are serving time in prison.

We do not concern our selves with the crimes of the mothers; we believe this is best left in the hands of the authorities and the justice department. Our primary concern is the babies' welfare.

This project is rather young but we have so far assisted over 361 babies. Its name “ Miriam” was born after a woman serving prison gave birth to a baby girl who was named Miriam and this child needed care like any other baby born by any other woman. Miriam are

denied their rights to grow up in a home environment they are left to grow up in adult prisons. GMAC carries out the following activities;

• Provision of basic necessities that children needs for example clothing, medical care, soap, nutritious foods, sugar and toys.
• Psychosocial support and counseling services are provided to mothers to help them cope while in prison.
• Mothers are provided with income generating activities, which are collective in nature to support their welfare while they, breast-feed their babies.
• Tracing of any existing relative that can support the child is done.
• After a child has reached three years the child cannot continue staying in prison with the mother so resettlement is done.
• The family where the child is resettled is given an income-generating project.
• Follow up is done after 3 months of resettlement.
• These children are enrolled in school.
