HIV/AIDS SENSITIZATION PROGRAMME IN SCHOOLS

Since HIV/AIDS has mainly affected the youth that are the most productive age group, this has not only affected the local unit economy but the nation as a whole. In order to address this problem, a bottom-up approach was sought right by Give Me A Chance. For this matter, we developed an HIV/AIDS sensitization in Schools as a way of creating HIV/AIDS awareness among the youth. The sensitization program is executed in Secondary and Primary Schools of Mpigi and Wakiso districts.

We hold consultative meetings with Chief Executive Officers, District Education Officers, District Inspector of Schools, and district Head Teachers of both Wakiso and Mpigi. We make them aware of our Goal and objectives of which they are very impressed and supportive. We are currently in 16 Schools, 10 Primary and 6 Secondary Schools. The program has attracted the neighboring communities and they are indeed equally benefiting from it.
Schools visited include:

Primary Schools:
1. St. Theresa Bika Primary School,
2. Kabaale Church of Uganda Primary School,
3. St. Joseph Kanzize Primary School,
4. St John Bosco Junior School,
5. Kiziba Mixed Primary School,

During sensitization, we have open talks, distribute information education Communication (IEC) materials like posters, books brochures and formation of Anti HIV/AIDS Clubs in each School and encourage Abstinence as the major way forward of HIV/AIDS prevention. All these are centered on creating HIV/AIDS awareness amongst the youth in Schools. In this community, HIV/AIDS has left many children orphaned with no proper care, support and guidance hence leading to street children and juvenile delinquents. Children and the community are made aware of affects of HIV.AIDS. all these activities are aimed at enhancing behavioral change amongst youth and the host community.

Other plans in pipeline:

1. We plan to have Mobile Voluntary Testing and Counseling center to communities on given days. This will be done in partnership with the Ministry of Health, which will provide Medical Personnel, Laboratory Technician and Testing kits for HIV.
2. Children will directly be involved in the campaign against AIDS/HIV through drama, music, debates and participating during HIV/AIDS celebrations.
3. Dissemination of HIV/AIDS information to Schools and communities as a way of increasing awareness.
4. Train HIV/AIDS Peer Education in Schools who can be able to spread information on HIV/AIDS to fellow peer at School and in their communities.
5. Formation of Anti HIV/AIDS clubs in each School we visit. Children will be able to open-up and speak their mind, ask questions that seem very ambiguous about the disease.
